Spotlight | Nehan Tariq

Here, we celebrate and honor some of our best students ever in the BSc (Hons) Creative Computing program, who reflect on their journey with the Bath Spa University Academic Center RAK, their struggles, achievements, and most importantly, their advice for the students after them!

Meet Nehan Tariq, BSc (Hons) Creative Computing 2020-2023

How do you define yourself?

Hi, I’m Nehan Tariq, 20 years old (don’t ask how that feels) and I’m originally from Pakistan, born and raised in Dubai, UAE. I’m a compassionate and curious person who values honesty, integrity and creativity. The Muslim community I am a part of has greatly influenced my outlook and personal background. I firmly believe in treating everyone with fairness and respect, regardless of their gender identity or how they express themselves. As a small business owner specializing in henna, I find great satisfaction in the work that I do. Beyond the financial rewards, my henna business serves as a therapeutic outlet that allows me to unwind while flexing my creativity. I have an affinity for activities that fully engage my attention and bring me joy. While my interests may shift over time, the continuous process of learning new skills and exploring different avenues keeps me motivated and inspired. My vision is to become a successful entrepreneur who makes use of technology to create innovative solutions, even in the small niche of henna artistry, to make people’s lives easier and more enjoyable. I aspire to a successful career as both a graphic designer and entrepreneur, bringing a fresh and modern approach to the design industry. I also seek to apply my expertise to the henna industry, merging my qualifications with my passion for design. I have set my sights on obtaining a Master's Degree in creative computing in future, although I am uncertain if I want to pursue it anytime soon.

What is your academic mantra? (Your trick to maintain academic excellence?)

I don't have a specific academic mantra, though I strongly believe that putting in effort and pushing oneself to achieve a goal is key. It's important to view failures as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than setbacks. Ultimately, hard work and persistence will pay off in the end.

Reflect on your journey (learning, achievements) in the Creative Computing program.

Initially, I was anxious about what lay ahead in my Creative Computing course, but with the help of our professors and my own self-study habits, I as able to stay on top of my studies. Receiving the academic excellence award in my first year, semester 1 bolstered my confidence and spurred me on to greater achievements. I find the modules in Creative Computing to be intriguing and the assignments enjoyable. Not only did I benefit from the guidance of my tutors and my personal studying, but I also formed a bond with a talented group of peers who provided unwavering support and motivation to do our best. I have had numerous opportunities to collaborate with my peers on academic projects, including the PIHSS website redesign in the Creative Industry Challenges module during my second year. In this project, I served as a UX and UI designer. Additionally, in the third year, I was able to work with my peers on other projects, such as Physical Computing and Creative Incubator, where we collaborated as a team and gained

valuable experience. These projects were not only beneficial for my academic growth but also strengthened my relationships with my peers.

What’s next once you graduate?

In terms of my academic pursuits, I may take a break before embarking on postgraduate studies. As for my professional goals, I am eager to take on fresh challenges in the realm of graphic design and strive to remain dedicated to ongoing learning and advancement in this field. Concurrently, I plan to continue running my henna business alongside my other pursuits.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

In the next 5 years, my plan is to keep growing my henna business while also exploring fresh opportunities in graphic design. While my plans may evolve over time, my intention is to remain committed to continuous learning and growth in my field and any others that may arise. Ultimately, my career and personal path may be impacted by various factors and may change as time goes on.

How will you remember Bath Spa University RAK?

I will always remember Bath Spa University RAK as a place of growth, learning, and community. The supportive environment provided by the faculty and my peers helped me to achieve my goals and become the person I am today. I will cherish the memories I have made here and carry them with me as I move forward in my career and life. Also, Uncle Bharat from the cafeteria deserves a special mention for his kind and considerate nature towards us as students. As one of his regular customers, I appreciate his personalized service and the care he puts into his work.

What would be your #1 advice for your juniors in the program?

I have a couple of advices.

Don't hesitate to socialize and make new friends, even if they come from different cultural or national backgrounds than you. Trust me, building connections with others can really enhance your university experience.

If you're having trouble with your assessments or just generally struggling with the course, don't be afraid to talk to your tutors or program leaders. It's better to speak up and get the help you need rather than keep it to yourself and risk your grades.

Please don't procrastinate! I totally get it, because I'm guilty of it too. But trust me, it's better to start working on your assignments early instead of waiting until the last minute. Sometimes we put things off because we feel overwhelmed, but even just taking small steps towards it, like creating a project file or doing some research, can make a big difference in the end.

We wish Nehan the very best in her career and life ahead, hoping to stay in touch! God Bless.
